1. Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety
|
 |
Occupational Health and Safety training, participants will be able to:
|

Define occupational health and safety
Explain basic health and safety terms such as accident, incident (near miss), occupational health and safety program, policies/procedures and risk
Describe the role of stakeholders in building a safety culture
Explain when a health and safety policy is required and what it should include
Name and discuss the elements associated with an effective occupational health and safety program
Discuss the benefits of implementing an occupational health and safety program in the workplace
Describe the costs related to accidents and injuries
Discuss how the reporting of incidents/near misses is key to preventing or reducing injuries in the workplace
Identify resources in occupational health and safety (professional associations, web sites, consultants, etc.).

2. Occupational Health and Safety Legislation

Upon completion of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation training, participants will be able to:

Discuss the purpose of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations
Describe what is meant by the “internal responsibility system.”
Explain what is meant by “due diligence” and how it can be practiced by: employers, supervisors and workers
Describe the process for the “right to refuse” unsafe work
Describe the role of OH&S committees/WH&S representatives in the right to refuse unsafe work
Explain the legislative duties of key people involved in occupational health and safety:
Employers, workers, OH&S committees/WH&S representatives, contractors, Department of Labour, and WHSCC.
Discuss the WHSCC legislation regarding early and safe return to work
How OH&S committees/WH&S representatives can support injured workers' early and safe return to work.

3. Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Committees/ Worker Health and Safety (WH&S) Representatives

Upon completion of Occupational Health and Safety Committees/Worker Health and Safety Representatives training, participants will be able to:

Define occupational health and safety committee and explain its purpose
Define worker health and safety representatives and explain their purpose
Identify the duties of an OH&S committee/WH&S representative
Establish an occupational health and safety committee
Develop a “terms of reference.”
Identify the activities each of the following perform: OH&S committee members/WH&S representatives, co-chairs, and the secretary
Demonstrate knowledge of the components of committee meetings
Explain the process for making, communicating and following-up on recommendations
Review the minutes-recording process

4. Hazard Recognition, Evaluation and Control
|

Upon completion of Hazard Recognition, Evaluation and Control training, participants will be able to:

Explain the purpose of hazard recognition, evaluation and control
Define the term hazard
Give examples of safety hazards and the four types of health hazards
Identify how people, equipment, materials and the environment (PEME) contribute to hazards
List the different ways of recognizing potential hazards
Discuss the process involved in accident/incident investigation
Discuss the role of OH&S committees/WH&S representatives in the accident/incident investigation process
Evaluate potential hazards by:
i. identifying minimum requirements under the OH&S Act and regulations;
ii. reviewing standards and guidelines; and
iii. evaluating potential risk.
Discuss hierarchy of controls - engineering controls (elimination and substitution), administrative controls, and personal protective equipment
Discuss the role the following play in hazard recognition, evaluation and control:
i. employers
ii. workers, and
iii. OH&S committees/WH&S representatives
Discuss how the recognition, evaluation and control of hazards can support injured workers in returning to the workplace.

Explain the four steps involved in workplace inspections:
i. Planning the Inspection
ii. Conducting the Inspection
iii.Completing the Report
iv. Monitoring corrective actions
